Interview with Chris Cappuccilli – Chief Executive Officer, Brown & Joseph, Ltd.

Date: February 21, 2013

Sima: Thank you for taking the time for this interview, Mr. Cappuccilli.

Sima: I understand that you played a key role in the founding of Brown & Joseph, Ltd. in 1996. Can you tell us a little more about how the company got started?

Chris Cappuccilli: I worked for a couple of collection agencies in sales roles. I knew then that there were innovative solutions that could assist our clients with their receivable problems. There were things that we could do that would lead to an increase in profits for our company and our clients. I was consistently denied the opportunity to improve processes, so I decided to break away and start an agency myself. That was the beginning of Brown & Joseph, Ltd.

Sima: How long have you worked in the credit and collection industry?

Chris Cappuccilli: Almost 30 years. I’ve been in the game for a long time now.

Sima: In your opinion, what separates Brown & Joseph from other “collection agencies?”

Chris Cappuccilli: We truly work for our clients as we see them as business partners. There are many collection agencies in the United States, but we are always finding innovative processes to make things better for our clients, whether it be by our recovery percentages or through communication. Our motto is “Second To None.”

Sima: What is the biggest change you have seen with Brown & Joseph, Ltd.?

Chris Cappuccilli: I don’t think I can point to one in particular. I would say the biggest changes have been, both, technology and the growth of our employee base.

Sima: What qualities do you find that a successful collector possesses?

Chris Cappuccilli: A successful collector is motivated, disciplined, intelligent, and bold. A successful collector is professional and knows how to communicate well.

Sima: What do you feel is the biggest challenge facing the debt collection industry?

Chris Cappuccilli: I would say the biggest challenge is the continuous change in legislation and complicated laws. With each change, our jobs become more and more difficult.

Sima: What do you consider to be the greatest accomplishment in your career?

Chris Cappuccilli: Brown & Joseph, Ltd., and the team that keeps the company successful, are my greatest accomplishments.

Sima: As an executive, what is the best advice you can give when it comes to leadership?

Chris Cappuccilli: Lead by example. Be conscience of your words and actions. Also, identify those that work hard and help them grow. If someone is not willing to try, don’t keep them on your team.

Sima: Is there anything that you would like to share about yourself, personally?

Chris Cappuccilli: I enjoy working around my house, be it yard work, inside the home or anything that would keep me off of a phone when I am not in the office.  I am always refreshed coming back into the office after a weekend of hard work.

Thank you Mr. Cappuccilli for your time and expertise.

More about Chris Cappuccilli, and Brown & Joseph, Ltd.:

Chris Cappuccilli played a key role in the founding of Brown & Joseph, Ltd. in 1996. Chris Cappuccilli, having worked in Business Development for several conventional debt recovery agencies, consistently received requests for help from his clients that were outside of the normal company service offerings. Bringing this to his managers, Chris Cappuccilli was denied the opportunity to expand the support to assist with his clients’ needs. Chris Cappuccilli quickly assembled a group of Subject Matter Experts with extensive expertise in Finance, Credit and Collections, Quality Process Control, IT and specific trade experience in Advertising, Transportation, Insurance, Staffing, and Manufacturing and Brown & Joseph, Ltd. was founded. Brown & Joseph, Ltd. has expanded internationally and now handles asset management for companies that import into the US.

Chris Cappuccilli is pleased that Brown & Joseph has received the award of Best Places to Work in Collections twice, in 2008 and 2010.

Chris Cappucilli was invited to speak at the United States Department of Treasury in Washington at the Government Management Financial Conference in 2010. Chris Cappuccilli continues to spend his time educating employees, clients and others in the credit and collection industry.

"We have, and always will, make it a priority to assist our clients in finding solutions to overcome the challenges they face as we develop new ways to help our client base lower their cost and improve efficiency with accounts receivable management," said Chris Cappuccilli.

Brown & Joseph is a member of the CCAA, certified by the CLLA and a member of the ACA International.

Meet the Staff with John Kloempken

Interview with John Kloempken – Executive, Business Development

Date: January 24, 2013

Sima: Thank you for taking the time for this interview, Mr. Kloempken.

When did you join Brown & Joseph, Ltd.? Can you tell us a little more about your role with the company?

Kloempken: I joined Brown and Joseph in June of 2012. At that time I worked in the commercial collection department which was invaluable experience because I became familiar with the company personnel, capabilities and clients.

Sima: Please tell me more about your background. How long have you worked in the credit and collection industry?

Kloempken: Longer than I would like to admit. In fact, I am an attorney and I have worked as a credit manager. Additionally, I have previously been employed for other collection agencies over the years.

Sima: What are some of the area(s) you specialize in?

Kloempken: I have experience in the legal, telecommunications, transportation, printing and financial industries.

Sima: In your opinion, how have you seen accounts receivable management change in the last 10 years? The last 20 years?

Kloempken: There are fewer people working in the credit departments than before. It seems to be more difficult to keep up with the aging of the receivables. Computers, as in all areas of business, have changed the way communications are conducted, how accounts are managed, and frankly, have limited the relationships credit departments can have with their customers because all communications have become impersonal.

Sima: As part of the sales team at Brown & Joseph, what steps do you take to keep long-term relationships with your clients?

Kloempken: I like to get to know their company and the contact person (or people) with the client. If you make an effort to know the business, it will only improve the relationship with a client. When troubles or accomplishments arise, you are in a better position to offer suggestions, which helps their organization and our collection efforts.

Sima: What is the best advice that you can offer a client when it comes to accounts receivable management?

Kloempken: If a customer is indicating to you through their actions, or by what they have told you, that they are not going to pay their account, believe them.

Sima: In your opinion, what separates Brown & Joseph, Ltd. from other “collection agenices?”

Kloempken: It is a well-organized company and they have spent a considerable amount of time and resources to streamlining their processes in order to remain a competitive force in the collection industry.

Sima: What is the best professional advice that someone has given you?

Kloempken: It is better to work than not work and it is better to work hard than to not work hard.

Thank you Mr. Kloempken for your time and expertise.
